New Ad Campaign Shows Trump Stiffed American Companies
When It Came Time to Pay Them
COLUMBUS – An ad campaign released today by ProgressOhio shows a disturbing pattern of Donald Trump not paying people who were hired to work for his companies.
The ads come amid new reports showing that his dishonesty extends to a charitable foundation that bears his name and follows new information suggesting he lied about how he used money intended to help small businesses after the Twin Towers fell on 9/11. Today’s Washington Post reports that Trump might have violated IRS rules against “self-dealing” when he spent $20,000 of Trump Foundation money on a six-foot painting of himself.
“His signature feature as a candidate is to lie and as a businessman is to cheat,’’ said ProgressOhio Executive Director Sandy Theis. “If he’s going to spend more of his time in Ohio I’m going to spend more of my time making sure voters know what he’s really about.’’
ProgressOhio released a series of first-person testimonials from Americans who were not paid for the goods and services they provided Trump-affiliated companies. Their collective stories show businesses and families experiencing severe financial distress because Trump did not deliver promised payments.
A life-long Ohioan, Theis said the state is known for honesty and a strong work ethic. She cited a Sept. 4 study by Policy Matters Ohio that showed worker productivity in Ohio rose by 61.5 percent from 1979 to 2013 but average hourly compensation fell by 1.1 percent.
“Fair-minded Ohioans don’t like it when they do their part but see the little guy get stiffed by the big guy,’’ Theis said. “Trump is not a great businessman. He’s a con artist.’’
The testimonials just tell part of the picture, Theis said. As USA Today reported, Trump has been involved in over 4,500 lawsuits, with hundreds of people accusing him of not paying them for their work.
