This week, conservatives notched another win when the Supreme Court ruled, in a 5-4 decision along party lines, that Ohio has the right to purge voters from their rolls for the simple act of not voting. The ruling furthers Republican goals of disenfranchising minority voters, who tend to lean liberal, while also stripping veterans of their right to vote while deployed.
Not-coincidentally, stalwart defender of the purge Secretary of State Jon Husted is also running for lieutenant governor in an election where those votes are probably going to his opponent. Husted’s shame knows no bounds. In response to this ruling that will strip thousands of their right to vote and make it more difficult to vote in the future, he actually claimed that the decision is a “victory for election integrity,” when really it’s a victory for politicians who want to take away the rights of their constituents.
Husted even went so far as to publicly insult veteran and Oak Harbor Mayor Joe Helle on the steps of the Supreme Court. Helle had been purged while serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was unable to vote because the state didn’t bother to let him know. When confronted by Helle, Husted actually lectured Helle on why, when Helle was in a combat zone, it was easy to vote while getting shot at.
Other Secretaries of State have actually done their job, taken politics out of the equation, and come up with creative ways to encourage Ohioans to vote. Senator Sherrod Brown even put voter registration forms on McDonald’s tray liners.
Husted’s corrupt commitment to his own re-election doesn’t end with selecting his own voters though. As a legislator and speaker of the House, Husted raked in $28,500 from the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow. In return, he pushed through legislation to remove oversight from the school, which was recently closed due to the school and its sponsors defrauding taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Oh, and ECOT paid almost $600,000 to ensure their employees couldn’t say anything bad about the school, or reveal that the school was a complete fraud.
Jon Husted: purger and fraud.
