POSITION SUMMARY: Leads the policy department in integrated strategies to address, and further the goals
of, the ACLU of Ohio’s priority issue campaigns.
Serve as a leader in the policy department, both in the Columbus office and in the organization
In coordination with the Senior Policy Director, set the priorities of the policy department and communicate those to members of the team.
Devise strategies to respond to opportunities and challenges on pressing civil liberties issues.
Mentor and guide other team members as they conceptualize and execute their own policy campaigns.
Work with other departments within the ACLU of Ohio to promote integrated advocacy and ensure policy strategies are effectively understood and communicated.
Act as leader within the policy department in the Columbus office, working with the Senior Policy Director to effectively ensure strong communication and teamwork throughout the organization.
Implement and develop strategic, effective advocacy campaigns for civil liberties
Work with the Senior Policy Director and other senior staff to create long range campaign plans integrating advocacy, legislative, communications, and legal strategies to further priority issues.
Coordinate the day to day progress of priority issue campaigns to ensure all staff members are working toward shared goals.
Utilize strong teamwork skills both within the policy department and across all departments.
Organize grassroots efforts among ACLU supporters and the general public to further campaign goals.
Grow the ACLU’s base of support for priority issues through strategic public education, advocacy, and communications tactics.
Cultivate relationships with coalition members, stakeholders, and other important constituencies.
Carry out the ACLU of Ohio’s mission through focused and disciplined attention to priority issues and execution of long range policy campaigns.
Integrate legislative and other political strategies into policy campaigns
Analyze the impact of various legislative and administrative proposals.
Cultivate relationships with elected officials, key leaders, key policymakers, and related governmental bodies.
Identify and track state legislative issues of interest to the campaign.
Research and draft testimony, fact sheets, and issue papers regarding policy and campaign issues.
Respond to, and coordinate with, national ACLU requests for action on various issues.
Participate in statewide coalitions and develop relationships with allies and other organizations to further advocacy goals
Speak publicly at state and local forums, conferences, meetings, and to the media.
Act as a representative of the ACLU of Ohio at stakeholder meetings, legislative hearings, community forums, and other public events.
Utilize strong grassroots and grasstops organizing skills to build coalitions working on shared legislative and policy priorities.
Effectively manage the ACLU of Ohio’s day to day role in strategic coalitions and maintaining its status and influence among partners.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals with an understanding
of the range of civil liberties issues and their implications.
Experience working on advocacy matters, lobbying, and organizing grassroots efforts.
Familiarity with an expansive toolbox of strategies to move decision makers, including targeting, field organizing, activism, and constituent engagement.
Experience working in coalition, including developing shared plans, coordinating external and internal communications, and understanding internal political dynamics among partner groups.
Experience with, and understanding of, Ohio legislative processes.
Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully plan and develop strategies to change policies and laws in action campaigns.
Drive, and have complete accessibility to a car
Work beyond 40 hours per week to accommodate a demanding schedule
Attend regular evening and weekend meetings and events
Ability to travel by car frequently throughout Ohio and out of state by car or plane occasionally
Communicate effectively with people in person, and via telephone, fax, and email
Create and transfer electronically computer-based written communications
Comfortable speaking publicly
Lifting and carrying 25 pounds
